Hugely popular thanks to its sportier looks – inside and out – and bigger alloy wheels. However, you also get stiffer suspension that does nothing for ride comfort. SE trim is better value and is where our money would go.
A four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine and electric motor combined, but the 530e can be driven for up to 36 miles (WLTP) on electricity alone (we managed 18.1 miles in our test). This silent progress befits the 5’s luxury remit very well, and when the battery is empty, the petrol engine remains suitably quiet. With emissions of just 32g/km of CO2, it’s a company driver’s dream but you'll need to keep the battery charged to avoid petrol consumption dropping to less than the average of 33.1mpg we saw during a mix of driving. Anyone doing high mileages mainly on motorways may well find the 520d much more economical.
