Review

The BMW 5 Series is a brilliant, classy and wonderfully refined luxury saloon, with surprisingly low running costs if you go for the 530e plug-in hybrid or 520d mild hybrid. It's a more complete package than its chief rivals, such as the Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class and Jaguar XF.

Trim: M Sport

Hugely popular thanks to its sportier looks – inside and out – and bigger alloy wheels. However, you also get stiffer suspension that does nothing for ride comfort. SE trim is better value and is where our money would go.

Engine: 530d

Begins the move from four cylinders to six, and steps up refinement in doing so. It makes the 5 Series quick, too (0-62mph in 5.7sec), but unless this is a priority, we’d stick with the 520d – it’s cheaper to buy and run, and isn’t exactly slow, either. Four-wheel drive (xDrive) adds all-weather traction and drops the 0-62mph down to 5.4sec.
