The A3 Saloon is tidy in bends, comfortable and well equipped, making it a very competitive option against its closest rivals. However, an Audi A4 or BMW 3 Series is worth the extra if you can afford it.

S Line is the one to go for if you’re after something a bit sportier, because it adds switchable driving modes and the sports suspension. Aside from that, most of the changes are aesthetic, with the S Line getting sportier exterior styling, sports seats inside and S Line badging throughout.

With 108bhp, the entry-level 1.0-litre petrol engine has enough power for everyday driving but needs to be worked hard if you want to get the best out of it. It’s a good option if you want to keep costs down, though, and should be quite efficient, promising around 50mpg.
