If space is crucial and the budget is tight, then try the Focus Estate. Despite rivals such as the Vauxhall Astra matching the Focus on price, ultimately the Focus's broader skill set gives it the win.
The boot on the Focus is a pretty decent 482 litres, and there's almost no wheelarch intrusion, so you should be able to quite easily fit in the stuff for a weekend's DIY.
Like the Focus hatch, the estate is genuinely good fun to drive. The higher-powered 113bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine offers the best value on the used market, and Zetec trim gives you all you need and more, namely alloy wheels, a CD player, air-con and curtain airbags.
