Volkswagen are set to release a cabriolet version of the 207bhp Golf GTI, expected to go on sale in August. The last time the Golf was available without a roof was back in the eighties with the MkI model. The new model is due to be available for leasing at Lease Cars Direct.
Under the Volkswagens bonnet is the same 2.0 litre TSI petro engine as featured in the hot hatch, which powers the front wheels. The vehicle carries an additional 180kg, resulting in a 0-62mph four tenths slower than the hatchback equivalent, at 7.3 seconds. The Volkswagen Golf's highest speed is also 2mph lower is 147mph.
The concept for the vehicles design was released last year, as anticipated, the unique bodykit and 19 inch alloys have been swapped for more conventional design to match the GTI hatchback.
Many of the Golfs features are kept, including red stripes placed horizontally across the grille, twin rear exhausts and telephone dial alloys. The cars fabric roof can be operated at speeds up to 18mph and takes 9.5 seconds to put away.
Inside the vehicle is enough room for four passengers, with the seats upholstered in tartan cloth as oppose to leather trim in the basic GTI hatchback models.
Prices are expected to be around £27,000, £4,000 more than the regular GTI hatchback, available in the UK in September.
