Specifically it was the 2010 GOLF SE 1.4-litre TSI five-door model took home the plaudits, with the car also succeeding in the Family Car class 'over £6,000' category.

According to editor of What Car? John McIlroy, the Volkswagen Golf has proved time and time again that consumers don't need to break the bank in order to get a car with impressive cabin quality and refinement.

"Volkswagen has got it right with the Golf, each generation of Golf gets better and better making it such a great used car buy," he said.

While being praised for the value for money the vehicle provides, it also received top marks for its economical engine and top class safety credentials.

"No other small family car matches the Golf for fun and comfort," What Car? said.
