New Peugeot 208

Peugeot 208Peugeot have always had a good history within the small car market, with likes of the 205, 206,and 207. Peugeots latest offer to the small car market is the 208 which is said to be the most radical reinvention of the supermini ever. If you look back a cars such as the 205 GTi or 106 GTi Peugeot have had a decent history building sporty hatch backs, but recently it they have failed to produce such vehicles. But now they are looking at a new design direction, improving quality and reintroducing the sporty driving experience of old.

The new three and five door Peugeot 208 has been styled to be more sophisticated and to stand out from its nearest competitors. The new 208 is set to be slightly smaller than the 207 as well as being lighter and cleaner too. Both the three and five door has been built on the same platform but they have been designed so both have their own unique appearance.

The three door has a large curve in the door which runs along side of the car from the rear lights and then drops down just before the front wheel. The five door has a less dramatic curved line that runs along the sill then upwards behind the front wheel. Both models do have some features that are the same including a floating grille, fog lights and boomerang rear lights.

Peugeot 208 backInside the new Peugeot 208 you find a large infotainment touchscreen which can be personalized with a range of trims. Glossy and soft touch materials have been used inside the new Peugeot 208 which is a big improvement on recent Peugeot materials. Peugeot say by making the steering wheel smaller has improved the drivers vision of the road and instrument panel which helps the driver focus more on the road.

Compared to the Peugeot 207 the new 208 is 7cm shorter and 1cm lower but Peugeot have somehow managed to increase legroom by 5cm & the boot by 15 litres to 285 litres, Peugeot have also shed 110kg of the 208 compared to the 207. Peugeots design team have spent hours in the wind tunnel to improve aerodynamics, the results mean the new 208 will return impressive fuel economy figures. No details yet on the exact figures but the Co2 emissions are down 34g/km on average, and all diesels engines for the Peugeot 208 will come under 99g/km of Co2

The Peugeot 208 three and five door will be in showrooms from June 2012 onwards. Expect prices to start at around £10,000 in line with the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo.
