The compact SUV new car market segment is a growing one here in the UK, and while some of these smaller, taller-car-shaped vehicles can handle the road less travelled, others are less adept at the rough stuff. The new Mercedes-Benz GLA can be specified with the firm’s 4MATIC four-wheel drive system; ready for winter roads or muddy fields.
The compact and car-like in body size, new GLA offers Mercedes customers a useful bridge between a normal road car and a full-size SUV, and this latest Mercedes model is nippy enough for around town, but, depending on spec, sits higher for a better road-view as well as bringing the extra surety of all-wheel grip.
There will be a choice of two petrol engines and two diesel engines when the new GLA goes on sale – perhaps with a sporty AMG model to come later. The 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines will range in power from 156bhp in the GLA 200 to 211bhp in the GLA 250.
The two diesel engines will be the most frugally minded of the range, with the 2.2-litre, GLA 200 CDI model enjoying 136bhp and 300Nm of torque, while emitting a lowly 114g/km of CO2. The GLA 220 CDI uses the same engine, but with boosted power to 170bhp and 350Nm of torque.
The striking new Mercedes-Benz GLA will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in early September, with the UK order books opening at the end of November. Full details of pricing and specifications will be announced around this time.
