Land Rover has announced its sixth annual winner of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) bursar winner, with Pole of Cold Expedition coming out on top.
Team leader Felicity Aston has secured her crew £30,000 in financial support and a loaned Land Rover Defender to help them on their voyage.
Her aim is to traverse the onset of winter across the European continent to Siberia where her team will reach the Pole of Cold, which is the coldest location in the northern hemisphere.
Joining her will be Gisli Jonsson, a mechanic with ample experience working in sub-zero conditions, and Manu Palomeque, a filmmaker and photographer. Ms Aston herself has already carried out a number of Antarctic expeditions in the past and is more than ready for the task.
The group intend to track extreme weather they encounter along the way through both scientific and creative means, while also recording aspects of physical, human and cultural geography too.
"Felicity and her experienced team have really captured the essence of the Bursary through the concept of their Expedition. We are delighted to support their journey to properly understand how different communities across Europe and Siberia deal with the onset of winter,” said Mark Cameron, Land Rover’s global brand experience director.
"With its expert capabilities the Land Rover Defender will not only enable the team to reach the remotest communities, it will also be adapted into a mobile studio enabling the continuous story to be accessed by a worldwide audience."
The Land Rover Defender will take them through tough weather conditions, which will include temperatures that stay consistently below -20 degrees C and reaching as low as -50 degrees C in the extreme. This will demonstrate the capability of the Defender in the world’s harshest conditions.
Taking 12 weeks in total, the journey will commence at the Royal Geographical Soceity (with IBG) in London this November. They aim to get across Europe and Russia, reaching their destination in Siberia and back via Kazakhstan to reach home by February 2014.
