BMW are preparing to take on the Porsche Cayman and Audi TT RS with a Brand new BMW M2 Coupe. This is not the only new car BMW are planning, as they are also looking at a brand new BMW M3 and a supercar to rival the Lamborghini Aventador. Dr Friedrich Nitschke, M Divisions new managing director revealed the new BMW M2 Coupe was key to his plans and he also commented that its only the start of things to come.
BMW hope this will help them take on the Quattro GmbH performance arm of Audi which is responsible for such models as the S and RS-badged Audis, plus Audis supercar the Audi R8. The new BMW M2 Coupe platform will also be used for the New BMW 2 Series which is due in 2014, the new vehicle will feature the engine mounted at the front with the drive coming from the rear wheels. BMW want to push ahead with unique styling and not go for what one BMW insider described Audi as having “sausage factory styling”.The new 2 Series will feature a unique front and rear styling, as the images reveal.
BMW are currently testing two engines a 3.0 litre turbo which produces 350bhp and the second is an innovative tri-turbo which gives similar performance figures but better fuel economy. This new engine will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the new BMW X3M. Power will be fed through BMWs new DCT semi automatic transmission, and to help keep the weight down the brakes will be taken from the current M3. The firm is expected to use their advanced carbon fibre reinforced plastics they have been developing and again this will help keep weight down to a minimum. This new material has been used before on the BMW E46 M3 CSL and is said to be stronger than steel but very light. An advantage the new advanced carbon fibre material has over standard carbon fibre is that it is much easier to work with and repair.
M Divisions new managing director Dr Friedrich Nitschke said “In the BMW M1 Coupe, we have a starter car for the M Division and we are continuing to develop this project. Such models must be sporty, and offer extraordinarily low fuel consumption. This is something we could achieve with the M2. I think the M1 Coupe proves there is room for an M2 coupe.” The new two door should arrive in 2015 and going off the demand for the current BMW M1 Coupe it is set to be a huge player for BMW. Reports for the sale of the new BMW M1 show that only 30 of the 450 right hand drive built remain unsold.
