The 2011 Tokyo Motor Show will see the launch of the BMW 5 series ActiveHybrid, it will share the same stand as the BMW X5 3.0-litre diesel which is set to go on sale for the first time in Japan.
Going on sale in early 2012 the 5 Series ActiveHybrid will be fitted with a 3.0 litre 335bhp turbo diesel engine and an electric motor with lithium-ion batteries. The BMW ActiveHybrid electric motor will increase the performance by delivering an extra 39kw of power to the rear wheels. This motor will sit behind the eight speed gearbox to help keep the cars balance close to neutral as possible. The new BMW 5 series ActiveHybrid can run on electric alone for a distance of only 2.5 miles at a speed of up to 40mph. Prices for the new BMW 5 Series ActiveHybrid have not been confirmed yet, but expect to pay around £62,000.
