Audi produces three millionth A3

Three million A3s have been produced by Audi, with the landmark figure being reached at its plant in Ingolstadt, Germany, last week.

There have so far been three incarnations of the premium compact hatchback and Audi highlighted the success it has seen since its 1996 debut.

Dr Frank Dreves, Audi AG board of management member for production, said: “With the Audi A3, we have created a new brand segment - we have been setting standards in the compact class with innovative technology and first-class quality for 17 years now.”

The first hybrid variant of the A3 is due to hit the market next year,  with expected economy of 188mpg and emissions of 35g/km of CO2.

Around 913,000 models of the first A3 were sold, followed by two million of the second generation. The third launched late last year and includes saloon, three-door and Sportback variants, with three more set to follow in late 2013 and early 2014.
